After the ovum is impregnated by a sperm it takes between 12-24 hours to form into a zygote and have the first split. The resulting cells are called blastomeres and will continue to split 12-24 hours apart. Once this mass of blastomeres implants into the cervix, about ten days later, it becomes an embryo.
